I am very looking forward to seeing how Deep Impact – one of, if not the best race horse ever to come out of Japan – will do in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe coming up this weekend. (1st Oct.) I think NHK is broadcasting the race live … I hope. I better check again, as there are no such thing as sports journalism in Japan.
I am not a big horse racing follower, but I do have an interests in whats currently going. Its all because I was sooo hooked up with the horse racing games on SNES and PC few years a go. I don’t bet, but I do keep an eye of it since then.

Bill Gates look-a-like at the Apple Store
Apparently, there is a Bill Gates look-a-like guy working at the Apple Store Shinsaibashi, at Osaka, Japan. According to the article, Mr. Bob Takahashi is an American Japanese, an work at the Genius Bar.
I don’t own a Mac, so I have only been to the store twice, so I don’t know for sure how true this newspaper (it didn’t say which) article is. I will check out, if I go to the Shinsaibashi area.

I am back
Its been a quite while since I last wrote. About a month, I think. It has been a month with my morale hitting the lowest in quite a while. Just don’t have energy or passion to drive things forward. But, I think I will slowly start to putting things back into this blog now.
Incidently, this is the 100th post I write here on Waviaei.

Waviaei Summer Reboot
OK, its a summer reboot of this site. Actually, its not just the design reboot, but the “content reboot” as well.
I posted last time in Japanese that I am going to quit posting entries bilingual – English and Japanese – here on Waviaei. There are several reasons for that, but lets just say that bilingual bloggin is not an easy thing to do. Perhaps I will write more about that in near future. Things I discovered, expereinced, and felt, in my attempt of bilingual blogging, may be useful for some perhaps.
I decided to go back to my original intensions of why I wanted to blog. I wanted to write about Japan: the news, trends, thoughts, things thats goining on, and life, and so on. There are quite few “Japan blogs” by non-Japanese here in Japan, but very rare to see an English blog by the Japanese. Perhaps there are something I can write. The thoughts through my over a decade experiences each in two cultures, Japan and England. So I will attempt from now on, to shift the majority of topics to be on Japan related stuff. Be it cultural, sports, techs, gadgets, web, news, trends, or anything. I will continure to write WordPress and web design related stuff every now and then, to keep up with my interests in these two. They are now put into two categories. Perhaps I will look into separating out these as another blog? May be.
As for the design reboot, the color scheme is much the same as the last. Aimed for 2-colum, left sidebar, fluid design to fucus more on the content. There needs to be no more language infomations to be displayed, so it feel much more simple in the “meta” sections. I tried to make the sidebar as short as possible too. Another big reason for all of this, was to cut all those fat down to make it slim. All those “make the website looks cool but increases lots file sizes” stuff are almost all gone. Gravatar is the only thing that possibly slows things down a lot, but I will look into a cache enable one later.
It has been desined for the modern browsers (Firefox and co.), but will work fine in IE as well. The notable differences are: max and min width don’t work, change in color when hovered in sidebar do not work, need to load JavaScript for the suckerfish dropdown menu, and additinal page list is displayed above the search form incase the JavaScript is turned off. I think thats about it.
I will keep on fiddling with the codes and the design in future. If there are any bugs and stuff, I would be greatfull if anyone could drop a comment on it.

他言語止めます
突然ですが、Waviaei開設当初から続けてきた、英語と日本語での多言語ブロギングを止めることにしました。これからは英語でのみ記事を書いていくことにしました。
理由は幾つかあるのですが、中途半端になってきた、日本語と英語の文化に違いの大きさを改めて気づかされた、当初の目的、目標からずれてきた、等です。
英語を選択した事についてはまず、ブログを開設使用と思ったきっかけです。日本のことや、日本で起きている事などを英語で、個人ブログの視点から書こうと思ったのが動機でした。そこに戻ろうと思ったのが１つです。それから、やっぱり自分は英語の方がダァーっと気持ちよく書けるのです。日本語向上の努力が足りないと言えばそれまでですが・・・。あと、英語の方がレスポンスを多くもらった印象があります。やはり日本人には一言でも良いから「気軽に直接本人へコメント」は向かないのでしょうか？
もちろん、たどたどしい日本語も含めて、僕の書き手としての能力が低いのは否めませんが。
と言うことで、一応日本語の記事を書くのはこれで最後となります。英語でもいいよ、と言う方はこれからもよろしくお願いします。主に日本関係の記事がメインとなるはずですが、所々WordPressの事とかも書くはずです。今までの記事（英語も日本語も）は消えませんので、アーカイブスからアクセスできますし、パーマリンクも変わりません。
日本語は別のブログとしても良いのですが、そこら辺はおいおい。さくらのサーバーは１つしかＤＢを作れないので、今ちょっと混雑してます。なので、ＷＰをインストールして日本語で、と言うのはおそらくしないと思います。ＭＴ+Sqliteとかサインアップするやつとかはありかな？ WordPress.comとかVoxとか、あとは、うーん。あっでも招待必要だっけ？そう言えば、はてなのアカウントはまだリングでしか使ってないな・・・。
東京でのＷＰオフ会行きたいなぁ。でも行けるかなぁ。。。
最近のWordPressネタ
最近気になった・発見したWordPress関係の小ネタのまとめ。
- 当たり前のようだけど、UTWのタグ数が多くなれば多くなるほど、サイト全体が重くなる。特にタグ・クラウドを表示している画面で。Waviaeiでも１～２回しか使っていないタグがいっぱい有ったので、全て整理。結構たまってきたので、付ける基準を考えながら整理。これで少し軽くなった。
- それでもUTWが重いと感じるのであれば、他の方法を探るべき。例えばJerome’s keywords。他に、カテゴリをタグ・クラウドのように表示するプラグインもある。
- 最近初めてK2をダウンロードした。実際に他サイトで使っているけど、凄く勉強になる。PHPのコードとか、条件分岐のタグ（if, ifelseとかね）の使い方とか。
- 今週中にはK2最新の0.9がでる予定。これには、最近公開されたテーマSandboxのコードが一部取り入られている。セマンティックなコーディングと、クラスの命名法もグッド。
- K2v0.9、Sandbox、ともにそうなんだけど、最近WordPress.comの方でhatomが採用された。Microformatsは最近気になっているので、個人的には「おおっ！」と思った。ただし、これでFeedburnerはどうなるんだろう。サービスが、ではなくて同一サイトでhAtomとFeedburner共存は可能なのだろうか？
- アクティベートすると、JavaScriptとかを読み込ませるコードをサイトのはじめに吐き出すプラグインが結構あることが分かった。これらのプラグインは全て
add_actionでwp-headへ付足す記述があるので、ifとか使って必要なページにのみ適用されるようにすべき。例えばcomment-previewはsingleでしか必要ない。 - 上の続きで、UTWはAjax関連の
scriptタグをwp-headに付足す。UTWの最新ヴァージョンを使用しており、かつAjaxを利用したタグ・クラウド・サーチ（のようなもの？）を利用しいる場合を除くと必要ない。なのでコメントアウトする - Lightbox2よりもLiteboxのほうが軽い。Lightbox2よりも、Lightbox1の方が軽い。
- query_stringタグを使う場合、使う場所と、同じページ内で干渉する可能性のあるタグは無いか、に気をつける。if(is_home())とかも影響される。問題が有る場合、回避方法はいくつかある。一番先に[php]$my_query = new WP_Query(‘Arguments’);[/php]を試してみる。
- 本家のCODEXを含め、ウェブ上のループ関連項目（特にAsides関連）のコード・ヒントなどは、WPのヴァージョンに気をつける。特に、WP1.5以前とWP2.0以後では大分違うようなので。

WordPressのテーマを日本語でも見栄えをよくする
WordPressコミュニティには素晴らしいテーマがたくさんあるのですが、ほとんど全てが欧文のブログを想定しています。気に入っても、いざ導入してみると「あれっ？」と思うこともすくなくないと思います。和文だと見栄えがよくないのが多いんですよね。
そこで、日本語でも見栄えをよくする為のポイントを書いてみます。

I set up a poll widget thing in the footer at the bottom. It’s more of a questionare than a poll. It’s about mulitlingual blogging. Is the way I am doing OK? PhotoZou – a new photo sharing SNS from Japan
I have been using PhotoZou for a while now. PhotoZou is a photo sharing web service by Unoh, a Tokyo-based web venture. Recently, they released the English version (now open beta) of this service.
At the bottom level, it is a photo sharing web service, like Flickr et al. You can upload the photos and share. You can tag your photos, and you can use it in your blog posts. You can specify the Creative Commons level, and there is a built-in Google Maps mush up, where you can map where you took the photos. However, its direction is slightly different. Where most photo sharing services are directed towards “sharing your photos with everyone on the Internet”, PhotoZou has taken more of SNS approach of “sharing your photos with your selected people on the Internet”.
日本語のみに別のCSS設定をする
今のデザインは、記事部分のフォント・サイズ（font-size）を14pxに。行の高さ（line-height）を1.4emに設定してあります。英文だとこれで全然問題ないのですが、やはり日本語だと行間がキツイです。そこで、記事内の日本語のみ少し大きめのline-heightを設定してみました。
TrueTypeフォント パーフェクトコレクションによれば、欧文の行間（レディング）はフォント・サイズの２０％くらいでOKだそうですが、和文の場合は５０％、もしくは７５％くらいが適切だそうです。ちなみに、組版用語では、５０％を「二分アキ」、７５％を「二分四分アキ」と言うんだとか。ともかく、欧文の行間は、和文の行間よりも狭くすると言う事です。
そこで、和文のline-heightを1.7emに変更しました。一応、1.6emとか、line-heightはそのままで、フォント・サイズを小さくしたりするのも試したのですが、結局は1.7に。

Litebox と Lightbox
以前、巷で評判のLightboxを入れていました。WordPressの場合、Lightboxの導入を簡単にしてくれるプラグインが幾つか有ります。見た目も格好よくて、まさに今風って感じなのですが、大きな問題点が１つ。読み込むjavascriptのファイルが大きい、つまり、サイトが重くなる事。更に、プラグインを使用するとどのページであろうと、所かまわず読み込みます。Aboutだろうが、Archivesだろうが・・・。
これらの理由で一時的にLightboxをはずしてました。でもやっぱり入れたいなぁと思ったので、プラグインを使用せずにLightbox JS v2.0を入れようと四苦八苦。上手くいったところで、MasayanさんはLiteboxに入れなおした事を発見。おおっ、そういう手があったのか、とこちらに乗り換え。Lightboxの時と全く同じ問題に直面しましたが、問題解決。Lightboxのトータル・ファイル・サイズ、110kbから、Liteboxの30.6kbへとスリムになった。
以下は、LightboxとLiteboxの両方で手こずった点。
発言する文化と日本のネット・カルチャー
数週間前に読んだ記事で、それについてふと思ったことが有った。ただその記事のURIを忘れてしまって思い出せない。デジタルARENAのインターネットの危ない話に出ていたと思ったんだけど、見つからない。うろ覚えで申し訳ないけど、とにかく書いてみる。
その記事は要するに、ブログ、炎上するブログ、匿名か実名か、どのような事をブログで書くべきか、どのような事はブログで書く場合注意すべきか、等々に関連する話題の記事です。そこに、「ブログで何かを書くと言うのは、渋谷の交差点の真ん中で叫ぶようなもの」と書かれていました。だから何も書くべきではない、とは書かれていませんでしたが、何を書くのかは注意した方が良い、もしくは、慎むべきと言ったネガティブな感じでした。
これをよんで思ったのは、ブログやインターネットがらみの危険性を全く認識していない人にとっては分かりやすい説明の仕方だと言うことと、そう言えば日本にはそう言う文化は無いなぁ、です。「そう言う文化」とは、市民が集まる場所で自分が今思っている事を皆（ほかの市民）に対して発言する文化です。
例えば、これもうろ覚えなんだけど、ローマに行った時にローマ帝国の都市には必ずと言っていいほど市民が自然と集まる場所（広場）が有って、そこには発言台（もしくはそれらしき物）が設置してあった、と聞きました。どんな事でも発言する事ができ、民衆もそれに耳を傾けていたらしい。その文化は西洋社会に根付いた。例えばロンドンの公園にはそう言う場所がある。以前NHKアーカイブスで再放送されていたルーマニア革命に関するドキュメンタリー番組では、革命後どこからともなく市民が広場に集まり、自然発生的に車の上に立ってそれぞれ「この国はどうあるべきか」等を思い思いに語っていたのがすごく印象的だった。
ちなみに、欧米で言う「広場」と言うのが日本には無いとも思います。ワールドカップ中継のパブリックビューイングの風景を見ているとよくわかる。ヨーロッパの都市には、それぞれ自然と人が集まる広場らしき場所が有って、そこに馬鹿でかいスクリーンを設置。みんなでビールでも飲みながら観戦しようと言う感じです。ところが日本はスタジアムの中だったり、映画館だったり・・・。文化の違い以外に、セキュリティの問題とかもあるんでしょうけど、やっぱり何かが違う。
一個人の発言に関する文化の違いが、日本特有のネット・カルチャーを生み出している気がします。良い点も悪い点も含めて。
Flickrとフォト蔵とWP
今回のデザインから新しくトップページにFlickrとフォト蔵に最近アップロードした写真をそれぞれ９つずつ表示する事にしました。正直どちらも使いこなせていないので、どれだけ面白い写真が表示されるかは自信ないですけど。
Flickrのアカウントは以前から持っていたのですが、あまり使ってはいません。非常に重いのが主な理由です。ブログに写真を貼ってあっても、その写真のリンク先がFlickrだったら、クリックしないことが多い。最近はちょっとだけ軽くなった気もしますが。
フォト蔵の方は縁あって使い始めたんですが、Flickrなオープン志向よりも、SNS的なクローズ志向の方向。とは言っても、写真をオープンに使う事もできるので、正確にはその中間かな。
１つに絞った方が良いのか、この２つを含めて、色々な画像共用サービスが有って面白いのと同時に、悩みます。あっ、スクリーン・ショットはこう言ったサービスにアップするのではなく、WordPressにアップしていこうと思います。でもそれはそれで、「これは使いやすい！」と思うプラグインにまだ出会った事がないからなぁ。あと、最近パブリック・ベータの段階に入ったFlockを試してみたけど、プラウザの上部にFlickrの写真を表示させる事ができるのは面白い。それに表示が凄くスムーズで快適。ドラッグ・アンド・ドロップもできるし。

IE７はDoubled Float-Margin Bugが修正されているのとIEハック
今回の新しいデザインを作成した際に、IE固有のバグ「IE Doubled Float-Margin Bugに悩まされました。
このバグは、floatするとmarginが２倍となる、IEのみの原因不明バグ。今回でのデザインでもそうだったし、おそらく一番起こりやすいケースが、divをfloat: leftで回り込ませて、同じdivにmargin-left: 20pxと同じ左方向へマージンを指定するケース。20pxがなぜか２倍の40pxに表示されてしまう。Waviaeiのフッタのように、複数のdivを全てfloat: leftさせると、一番左端のdivのマージンが２倍になる。
解決方法はpositioniseverything.netで示されているように、display: inlineを指定するか、CSSプロフェッショナル・スタイルのp.248に書かれている、マージンの代わりにパディングで指定する。
図書館の紙の裏でWin-Win
図書館で本を借りると、借りた本のリストと返却日が書いたレシート（？）みたいな紙あるじゃないですか？先日気が付いたんですが、裏に広告がでてるんですね。しかもオンライン書店ビーケーワン！
この図書館は大阪市立中央図書館ですが、最近はこういう公共施設に広告を出せるんですね。ちょっとびっくりしました。公立の図書館なので、税金で運営されているんですよね？と言うことは競争にはならないのかな。ビーケーワンとしては、本に興味がありそうな人にピンポイントで広告を出せるので戦略的にぴったしそうだな。図書館の方としても、少ない出費（だと思う）で広告料を得られるのだから、Win-Winの関係なのかも。
まぁでも大阪市だからなぁ。収入をまたしょーもない事につぎこむんちゃうか 😡
トラックバックURIの自動選択
WordPressはピンバックが出来るので便利ですが、世間ではまだまだトラックバックが主流です。特にポータル・サービス系とMTのシェアが高い日本は・・・:cry:
そこで、トラックバックURIをきちんと表示する事にしました。WordPressは記事のURI、つまりパーマリンク、がトラックバックURIとは違うのでややこしい。テキストリンクだけで表示させるのは分かりにくい。WordPressユーザでも、初心者の方はその違いに長時間戦ってしまう事になる。
以前sbを使っていた時に設置していた自動選択できるフォームが便利なので、WordPress用に編集して設置。

Waviaei Design ver.2
IE対策でちょっとてこずりましたが、なんとか完成。以前のデザインは「0.5くらい」って言ってましたが、あれはもうver.1にします（笑）。それで今回は「Waviaei Design ver.2」とします。一応サブタイトルは「Midori」。そのまんまやんけっ！、と突っ込まれてもおかしくないくらい、なんのひねりもありません。
今回のデザイン、レイアウト、そして色に関するインスピレーションのネタなどを少し書いてみようと思います。
